February 4th is the USO’s 69th birthday. That’s not a meaningful milestone in itself (unless you’re 68), but it reminds us that in parts of 8 decades, this organization continues to deliver support for troops and families with compassion and relevance.

In 69 years we’ve moved from providing letter-writing stations to providing free Internet connections. Films projected onto sheets have become videos on large screen TVs. There’s still coffee and magazines and comfortable furniture. There’s still the respite from hard duty. And, there’s still Mom in the kitchen making a cake.

I can't stress enough the importance of checking out the clearance section of your local department stores. Today, while at the mall with a friend, I browsed through the clearance section of Boscov's (of course you will always find the clearance section in the back of the store, so you get the bonus of a little more exercise in your day!). I found holiday items at 50 to 80 percent off, which was to be expected, but I also found 70% off of watering systems and some garden tools. Perfect for the upcoming growing season!

So today, I purchased a total of four packs of Halloween napkins (which I love by the way), three garden sprinklers and a garden claw for a total of $4.66 with tax. Are you kidding me?

So don't always assume that you won't find anything you need/want in the clearance section. It's worth your time to take a peek!

Today is National Girls and Women In Sports Day. It is a special day for girls and women to celebrate their participation in sports and athletics. When Title IX was enacted in 1971, 1 in 27 girls in high school participated in athletics. One in three girls participate in athletics in high school now! Women participated in only 13 of the 24 events of the 1984 Olympic Games; in Beijing in 2008, female athletes competed in 28 of the 32 Olympic events. There has been an explosion in the number of athletic opportunities open to women and girls of all ages and levels of ability.

To help celebrate, why not attend a local girls' competition like a high school basketball game or swim meet. Watch a woman's tennis match on television or simply expose your daughter to sports by playing catch in the yard, teaching her some gymnastics or how about shooting some hoops in the driveway?

Happy Groundhog Day everyone! Unfortunately, once again, Punxsutawney Phil is predicting another six weeks of winter for us. But let's celebrate the fun holiday that is Groundhog Day anyway! Here are some fun, frugal ideas to get you started:

Go outside and run around and stomp your feet to try to wake up the groundhog.

Starting today, make a weather graph to see what really happens.

Turn on certain lights in the room or go outside and look for shadows.

On a calendar, count how many days there are until the first day of Spring.

Use a lamp and paper and trace peoples' shadows.

Make groundhogs out of brown play dough.

Make a groundhog puppet using a lunch-size paper bag.

Use a paper plate to make a groundhog mask.

Try playing Shadow Tag with a group of friends.

Pretend to be a groundhog by climbing in a large box. Pop out and see if you can find your shadow.

So today is Spunky Old Broad Day. We all have a spunky old broad in our lives. You know her, that grandma that roller skates with her grandchildren, the little old neighbor lady who never seems to sleep, that senior citizen who could run laps around you at the track. Well, today she should be celebrated! What joy these women bring into our lives!

My favorite spunky old broad passed away sixteen years ago. She was my grandmother. Talk about spunky. She wasn't the physically active kind of spunky, she was the personality kind of spunky. She had the sharpest wit and the most sparkly eyes of anyone I knew. She loved life and lived it well. I miss her very much.

Let's get out there and do something nice for those spunky old broads in our lives before their magic is gone forever! Happy Spunky Old Broad Day!

Ideas For Stale Bread

Yesterday, I opened the bread drawer and realized there was an entire loaf of bread that was past its prime. Luckily, it was just getting stale, not moldy. So, that is what has sparked today's money saving post. It makes me very sad when food is wasted and I try to make sure no food ends up in the garbage. Here's some great ideas to use up that stale bread, whether it's a slice or two or a whole loaf:

1. Make a batch of french toast - separate slices with waxed paper, pop into a zippy bag and freeze. When ready, take the desired amount of slices out and heat them in the toaster. Perfect for school mornings when you don't have time to make homemade. (Did this with half of my loaf)

2. Make homemade croutons. This works especially well with multi-grain or other hearty breads. Cut the bread into cubes, drizzle a little bit of olive oil or melted butter, mix well. Sprinkle with your choice of seasonings and "toast" in a low temperature oven until crunchy.

3. Make a breakfast strata. It's a casserole that uses bread, eggs and some other ingredients. Just google for a recipe. If you're not going to eat it right away, freeze it for a lazy Sunday morning!

4. Whir stale slices in your food processor to make bread crumbs. I usually do this with the ends and keep a container in the freezer. I haven't purchased bread crumbs in years!

5. Use it to make bread pudding. Again, just google the recipe.

6. Refresh it. The most successful revival technique seems to be: Heat the oven to 300ºF. Place the bread in a paper bag. Close the bag and dampen it slightly. Bake the bagged bread for about 5 minutes or until it is like new. You have to be ready to eat the bread in 10 minutes, or it will get even harder than before.

7. Make grilled sandwiches. Grilled sammies are a treat and it really doesn't matter if the bread is fresh or stale, they turn out great! (we had grilled cheese and tomato soup with the other half of our loaf)

8. If all else fails, feed it to our fine feathered friends. They're looking extra hard for food during cold winter months!

Hope this helps someone to stretch that food budget a little bit further!

This used to be an old milk glass lamp that I found at a yard sale for $2.00. I loved it because it reminds me of my mother, who used to collect this particular design (grape leaf) milk glass. The shade was torn and it was one of those lamps that you had to buy a shade that fit over the bulb. With the new energy efficient bulbs, that's not an easy thing to do! So, I removed the wiring and am using it for a candlestick. I fill the bowl portion with seasonal items and absolutely love it. If you come across something that you love, but think "I don't need one of these", try to visualize it as something else. It may well be worth it. I smile every time I look at my new "candlestick".

Ok, so we all look for the obvious sales signs when we are out shopping: the clearance racks, the big red "SALE" posters, etc. What the majority of people are missing out on are the "discounts" a lot of retailers provide.

For instance, today I was shopping and getting some fabulous sale items. I was standing at checkout and overheard the cashier tell another customer that they offer a discount for nurses. When it was my turn, I asked the cashier to explain the discount. She informed me that New York & Company stores not only offer discounts for AAA members, but also for "public service employees" such as teachers, nurses, law enforcement, etc. I quickly asked her if my career position entitled me to the discount and sure enough...a whopping 15% more off of my total! It reminded me of a time that I got a 10% discount on bait in a tackle shop while on vacation because a worker saw my ID card.

AAA members can get so many discounts and not on just hotels and rental cars. Currently, if you're looking for a new computer system, you can get up to $50 off for being an AAA member. There's a lot of retailers that offer discounts, such as Gap, KMart and Kohl's. So if you're a member, head over to the AAA site and look at all of the offers!

Bottom line...ASK if a retailer offers any discounts, you just may be very pleased with the answer!

Frugal Wrapping...

Have you seen the price of wrapping paper these days?? Wow. Luckily, that's an area where I can cut back. I did not buy a roll of wrapping paper this year due to my "pack rat" tendencies and my frugal mind. Creativity is the key when getting those gifts ready for presentation. Here's a few ideas:

Hard to wrap gifts:

If you have an odd-shaped gift that doesn't have a box, tissue paper is the way to go! I have a stash of odd and/or previously used tissue paper that I dig out for these occasions.

First you lay out a few sheets of tissue paper (use one piece of tape to hold together if you have to use more than one for length). I like to color coordinate with the gift if I can and I make sure the paper is dark enough that the gift doesn't show through.

Cover your item with the tissue paper best that it fits and tape together any random pieces. Then gather at the open ends. Now, take one of those squished, pathetic bows you have from last year and remove the paper backing, along with the staple:

Unravel the bow and snip one end in the middle. You can now take both ends and just pull them apart, making two ribbons.

Secure the ends with the ribbons and curl with your scissors. There you have it! A beautiful gift, pennies to wrap, and easy to open.

Some more ideas:

Planters filled with gardening tools.
Mugs filled with coffee or tea.
A bottle of wine and two wine glasses attached with a beautiful bow.
A vintage recipe box filled with new recipe cards or small kitchen gadgets.
A cookie jar filled with homemade cookies.

Or how about a jewelry box filled with fun girly stuff. Close it up, decorate with ribbon and done:

Use your imagination and you won't be spending a small fortune to wrap those special gifts any more. Another tip: I keep every scrap of paper (no matter how big or small) that's left over after wrapping. It comes in handy to wrap those stocking stuffers! Another trick: the pieces that you don't use (or the used paper still in semi-good shape)...run it through a paper shredder and you have filler for baskets and gift bags. Hope this helps alleviate some of your wrapping woes this year!
